Orthodontic retainers may be removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new, correct positions after your teeth have been straightened. Your orthodontist will instruct you on how to care for your retainer and about the duration of the wear. Wearing your retainer as directed is crucial to prevent regression of your treatment.
Fixed dental retainers are also referred to as bonded or permanent retainers. A thin wire is bonded or attached to the teeth and cannot be removed by the patient. This type of retainer can be used on the upper front teeth but is typically used to maintain the arch on the lower front teeth.
Removable retainers take the form of two common types; Hawley and Essix. The Hawley has a plastic body with wire clasps to grip the teeth. The Essix retainers are clear plastic and look very much like Invisalign Braces. However, the retainer is just maintain the tooth's current alignment. The advantage of removable retainers is that they can be removed during eating or brushing.
